In many countries that would not be seen as abnormal, it's just that US culture is completely screwed up regarding employee rights and representation. I could go on and on. None of these make Google a terrible employer. But there is a lot of space for improvement, and Google has a shit ton of budget for improvement that they're currently spending enriching investors.
