The thing that rankles me the most about @chef's stance is that it further propagates the idea of tech nationalism, and that workers and companies have an unconditional requirement to sell to their "own government" regardless of how their technology will be used.
There is a pretty noticeable difference between "following the law in your main country of operation" and "having a stance to not sell to X". I find "they don't sell to Iran" to be a pretty poor argument.

I suspect they wouldn't sell to the PRC government's ethnic cleansing program. So why is the US special?

Dunno, it's your suspicion not mine ‾\_(ツ)_/‾ Occam's razor would indicate that they just care about money > ethics, not that there's some grand tech nationalism movement going on (including in companies led by US immigrants like Google?!)
