if you are an infosec person working on web security, start with getting this into your head: to many people, Flash is valuable, and fundamentally irreplaceable. you are obligated to make a very strong claim for killing Flash, and you have to work a lot to make it accessible.

it is not enough to say "herp derp Flash is insecure, good riddance". this just shows how disconnected you are from the needs of the people who you are supposedly protecting. and yet this is what virtually everyone does

this is a good example of the paternalistic attitude infosec people often express. "i decided that you don't need Flash anymore. if you think you actually need it, welp, it is not my problem, go replace it somehow."https://twitter.com/jit_j/status/1078509048927002624 …

That doesn't mean that someone won't have a creative interest in preserving Internet history by doing this. I suspect that someone will find a way to transpile flash to WASM. That's how I would go about solving this problem, if I were inclined.

In fairness: Building a flash compatible layer to preserve it would be easier if it was open; sandboxing it wasm-style too...

I agree that Adobe is a very bad steward of Flash, but people on shoestring budget and in their free time did some quite far reaching work (e.g.: Gnash, Shumway) and I don't think that it would be such a massive engineering challenge to push it to completion...

Naive question: how much of a legal minefield would it be for a company to attempt this without Adobe's blessing? Thinking RE legislation, patents, etc.

Would Adobe be opposed to it in the first place? They open-sourced large parts of Flash as a part of their Flex project.

RE for interoperability is covered in most jurisdictions, *publishing* the results often less so.
