The denials by the companies mentioned in the article, pointing out factual errors in the reporting, as well as the timing of these revelations (tariffs, anyone?) and the handwavy it's-like-opening-a-door explanation makes me a little sceptical of this.

In an attack this sophisticated, it would also be strange to continuously ping a C&C server; something that's easily visible when introspecting traffic sent out over the wire.
