namecheap is now suddenly very receptive to not putting my personal information in my registered domains for anybody to whois search for free. Right when the world is talking about privacy issues.

Well yes: GDPR basically says they have no business sharing your personal information since it's not needed for operation of the service. Some (aka. US companies) disagree. See eg https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/05/29/whois_icann_lawsuit/ …

We've made this free for everyone in the world, not just European customers. There are others out there like Godaddy that still charge and will continue to charge for this. This was a choice we made not some forced option as implied here.
