Earlier this year, @harvardiop students and I traveled to South Carolina to host a town meeting w/ young voters. Our student moderator asked: What do you guys look for in a candidate?
Consistency.
Knowledge on the issues that they're speaking about.
Intersectionality.
Balls.
After I questioned word choice - "Oh no, no, no, no, no. Just figuratively, I guess. Just the ability to make the gutty decisions. I don't care if it's a woman or a male, it doesn't matter. Just the person who's willing to make the really hard choice and can make it well."
Because the American voter always puts intersectionality at the top of their list?

How about courage? Resolve? Gumption? Determination? But balls??? That’s pretty tone deaf these days.
All good words that describe the same attribute; the power of qualitative research is in understanding the words and meanings behind the word choices voters use. Whether or not I, or anyone would use the same, not the main point of the exercise.
“Balls” ??? So men only, then? Rethink your terminology.
