Maybe in one part of the business (e.g. a conf) but definitely not whole thing. Rarely see margins lower than 50% for bootstrapped SaaS below $500k MRR
Exactly.
Agreed. If you’re running a restaurant, squeezing another point out of your profit margin by cutting expenses is a business-saving move. On a business where your margins are already 70%+ (as I assume yours are), the opportunity cost of getting to 71% is probably too high.
Haven’t thought this through at all, but I think it’s reasonable to say something like, “If my profit margin dips below X%, I will look at costs and try to get back to (X+5)%. Otherwise, I focus on generating more revenue at the current margin.”
Are you talking about profit margin before I've paid myself? When I say "profit" I'm talking about what's left over after what I've taken out of the business. That's what I'd like to improve.pic.twitter.com/C9GW1ammiY
For this argument to hold up, the focus should be on marginal profit of additional revenue. That doesn't hold steady at your company's profit margin, it decreases as fixed costs are covered. Also, if your dividends are arbitrary, your profit margin is meaningless.
