Clean asset imports means you can switch out objects, iterate quickly, find stuff, not have to piss around realigning things by hand in the editor.

Learn to set up your 3d app, painting app, Z brush and game engine so the scale and orientation for import and export is bang on 1 to 1 so you can round trip from engine to mesh, to texture to engine, back to zbrush etc. Round tripping makes for fast iterations.
