I don’t suppose anybody like or cares to take a stab at the same theme?

Took a break from learning the drums to harmonize the Star Wars theme on piano.

  5. And lastly, I'll just say that only three of these are geometry terms, and the other is *very* much not: - bisectrix - fellatrix - directrix - generatrix

  6. Similarly misleading, there is the executrix, who is in fact *not* a most deadly woman, but a female executor of a will. You can probably guess what an inheritrix is at this point. At any rate, I think I might carefully triple-check any documents I send to an administratrix.

  7. Seems pretty badass to be an aviatrix, though. (Apparently that was actually once a common way to refer to female aviators.) And, despite what you may think, an oratrix is just a plaintiff, and a testatrix is a 'deceased woman who has left a legally valid will.'

  8. Seems like every '-trix' word lives under the shadow of The Matrix and 'dominatrix', even if they're quite unrelated. You'd think that running into a tortrix or a rectrix could wreck your day (and more), but it turns out that they're just a moth and a tail feather, respectively.

  9. It might be more etymologically correct to say, "Silly rabbit, Trix aren't for kids, they're for straight women." After all, the suffix '-trix' comes from Latin, and denotes feminine nouns and adjectives, plus straight geometries.

Sometimes I abandon a tweet or essay quickly once I start it. The act of trying to write something novel and interesting often uncovers problems with my ideas. So, while these may be publishing failures, they are also intellectual successes since they teach me something new.

Btw, I’m conceiving of situation in a broad way (Popper talked of problem-situations.) So, a situation could be about your life, or something very specific like a particular math problem. In either case, you want to relevant ideas to be available.

Our minds are very good at automatically recalling past situations similar to our present one (according to all sort of different criteria). That lets us reuse old ideas. Perhaps equally important, it lets us recognize when our present situation is *unfamiliar* and novel.

Btw, Thomas Sowell has built on that work in his book Knowledge and Decisions.

Friedrich Hayek wrote a paper "The Use of Knowledge in Society" which is closely related. Of course, the precise mechanisms for using knowledge well across a society are very different than doing so within a mind, but the fundamental problem is the same.

This is as true within a single mind as it is across a society. In the case of a single mind, our associative memory suggests, like Netflix might, an idea which we ought to consider next, based on our present situation.

I'm constantly struck by the parallels between things that happen across society, and those that happen within a single mind. Most recently, I've been thinking about the problem of 'the use of knowledge': Knowledge is useless unless it's made available when needed.

Here's an excerpt from an upcoming newsletter. :) "In culinary terms, my mistake was treating life like a buffet rather than a supermarket." (I think this is the first time I've been intentionally cryptic on Twitter, lol.)
