Dev tools are incredibly underrated–by investors, entrepreneurs, and even engineers themselves. When good engineers make at least $200K+, one of the highest leverage things teams can do is to invest in dev tools to greatly improve productivity. Yet they're usually an afterthought

Biggest change in my thinking since graduating college that I never expected: SV needs more local philanthropy and arts patronage and less "innovation"/toys (spaceship campus really??) Just look at quality of life and culture in NYC vs. SF outside of your walled gardens...🤦‍♂️

Just realized that Elon sort of did this with Tesla when he led their Series A with his own money (h/t )

Why isnt the search fund model applied to venture? Experienced founder/operator could raise a fund as solo GP ($10-20M), invest all into 1 company's series A, then join as COO (or even CEO) LPs would be diversified if they invested in many funds + MAJOR skin in the game for GPs

Why don't we see more tech PE buyouts of Series A/B companies that never reached their full potential, or even pre-breakout?

“There’s a kind of “Golden Rule” that’s in place if you participate in tech: “Treat others as if they might be the next great founder.” Status illegibility is a virtue.” - ⁦

Ideas for next Spotify products: Embedded merch, ticket sales, exclusive music publication (like a modern Pitchfork, Billboard, etc), Tiny Desk style videos, buy Genius, merge Anchor with main app, (free/paid) exclusive livestreams, enable podcast comments Got more ideas?

Cool GitHub repo I found that lets you create charts and stuff that look like sketches. Now we can make good looking hand-drawn graphs just like without any drawing skills 😈

Another classic 👇 Ppl in tech that intuitively understand social capital as Danco describes it in this post have a huge career advantage–which is actually scary to think about as an introvert eng type If you are naturally good at this AND can code..🤯 You'll go far

...financial reasons but because they have a personal interest in seeing that founder succeed - Much more valuation insensitive and don't need a venture return profile How do you compete?

Trend of (ex/)founders leading/taking the whole round (Notion, Front etc) means that investors are competing with founders who are: - Extremely patient, no LP returns to worry about - Can empathize with SaaS journey and can provide tactical advice - Often investing not just for..

Is there a CEO who has done a better job taking over mega-cap company than ? Azure from nowhere seems to have blown past google & competing with AWS. Github acquisition 2nd only to Insta for LT value? Culture that gave us Zune transformed to culture of innovation

Imagine if FB put $2B in to Parse in 2014 instead of acquiring Oculus Oculus could still turn out as a great acq...but i'd argue Parse would have a material impact on FB mkt cap today, unlike Oculus

There are 3 major cloud co's: AWS/MSFT/GOOG As bottom of the stack gets commoditized (compute, storage, etc), rev growth/differentiation will come from higher lever abstractions If FB actually invested in Parse, im convinced theres a good shot there wouldve been 4 major clouds

Relative to its ubiquity @ 35% mkt share of all websites, Wordpress/Automattic should be $100B+ not $3B (see SHOP @ $50B+ and rising) So maybe remote work/unconventional mgmt not always appropriate if opp is big enough But also maybe a good time to buy Automattic secondaries..

Something I cant stop thinking about: With GitHub, MSFT bought direct access to all devs for ~$190 each ($7.5B/40m). Devs are currently the most undermonetized cohort relative to value created In an age where CAC is everything, this'll go down as 1 of cheapest acquisitions ever

HashiCorp seems to be killing it. What did they do differently to successfully transition from open-source to enterprise that Docker and npm couldn't do?
