The bar is not as high as you think. You can: - get that job - meet that person - start that company But because you think the bar's so high, you won't even try. Which is why the bar’s so low!

"My brain . . . it cannot process failure. It will not process failure. Because if I sit there and have to face myself and tell myself, ‘You’re a failure’ . . . I think that’s almost worse than death." -- Kobe Bryant, basketball legend, RIP

You might not be a great CEO, especially not yet But anyone else: - wouldn't really know the product cold - wouldn't really know the customers - wouldn't really know crazy nuances of the market - wouldn't see the future - wouldn't care so much So you are probably the right CEO

Honestly, it might not all be worth it But you'd probably be a lot less alive if you weren't trying to build something great

Design is more important than ever for startups. One theory why: almost everything else has gotten easier. Basic tech stacks are a commodity—automation enables smaller, focused teams—capital is abundant. Product design is a larger percentage of what’s left.

Before I became a founder, I would criticize often. “Wow that sounds like a stupid business idea. Jesus their unit economics are bad. That seems unsustainable.” Now that I’m a founder, I think, “Props on them for putting themselves out there and creating something in this world.”

The problem w/ middle men is not only that they are rent-seeking, but also that, in creating additional layers btw the data & the decision, they require more simplified explanations of complex phenomena, obfuscating how the underlying system actually works.

The internet has both created and destroyed vast profit pools for B2C businesses. Mattresses are a solid case study: the industry has been squeezed by a) price transparency & b) lowered barriers to entry. Tuft & Needle was founded in ‘12, w/ $6k and grew to $100M w/ no VC funding

Super interesting cognitive bias from Kanneman's work: When all the options are good, people are risk-averse. When all the options are bad, people are **risk-seeking**. It's when people are backed into tough situations that so much value ends up being created (pivots, etc.)

Being a founder is about facing the dark abyss, your toes hanging over the edge, while you’re chewing on rocks & glass, desperately trying to not fall to a painful & certain death —as the cowards who’ve never risked anything in their lives criticize you for trying.

Love this from Marc Andreesen: "The world is a very malleable place. If you know what you want, and you go for it with maximum energy and drive and passion, the world will often reconfigure itself around you much more quickly and easily than you would think." —

My son and I could watch this all day. Galton Board. 3000 beads hitting 174 pegs in 12 rows, each time with a 50/50 chance of moving left or right. The result each time very closely matches the “bell curve” normal distribution.

Junior jobs are: * publicly advertised * comparatively abundant * narrow, structured * often “technical” in nature Senior jobs are: * not publicly advertised * rare * broad, unstructured * often effectively “sales” jobs Transitioning from junior to senior is often HARD.

In performance psychology, there is a concept known as “implementation intentions,” which is a strategy to plan for the worst — so you can perform your best. Navy Seals have the 40% rule, which means you usually hit mental resistance at about 40% of your capacity —

Announcing the 2020 Task/Obligation Jubilee! 🎆 A jubilee is when debts are forgiven, so people have a chance to start over. You can do this for yourself, in relation to the backlog of years of tasks & obligations that you've built up. How? Here's a thread of different ways 🧵

Today, the best operator investors are starting micro funds to invest in top talent. Soon, many of them will start studios to incubate companies with top talent instead.
