  2. Leslie Jones and the Little Orchestra of London offered chamber-scaled Beethoven before it was cool. These late performances flow beautifully and the playing has natural sparkle. No. 8 may well reach my Desert Island. ♥️♥️♥️

  4. 7/ #3 Emil Gilels plays Op. 2 No. 3 A great virtuoso really brings out the best in Beethoven's first virtuosic sonata, and they don't come any greater than Gilels.

  5. 6/ Beethoven's most harmonically audacious work to date, its scope, scale and virtuoso technical demands must have struck terror into the hearts of amateur keyboard players, like a concerto where you must play the solo and orchestral parts at the same time.

  6. 5/ Op. 2 No. 3 exploits the piano's power, dynamic range, variety of articulation, sustaining capability and range of colour like no music had done before. It's nothing less than a manifesto announcing the dawn of a new age. The harpsichord is dead - long live the piano!

  7. 4/ Beethoven's Op. 2 Piano Sonatas were every bit as revolutionary as his Op. 1 Piano Trios. Where the teacher's works were suitable for the good old harpsichord, the pupil's are fundamentally pianistic. Imagine playing Op. 2 No. 3 on this instrument!

  9. 3/ Did the slightness of Beethoven's dedication indicate that he knew he'd breathed a totally new spirit into the domestic genre he'd inherited from the hands of Haydn and Mozart?

  10. 2/ "Joseph Haydn gewidmet" As Beethoven was writing his first great piano sonatas, his teacher Haydn was finishing his last. The world's most celebrated composer was apparently upset that his pupil's terse dedication showed him so little respect.
