I just returned from Rikers Island where a group of elected officials exercised our legal right to inspect correctional facilities. What I witnessed was a humanitarian crisis. A horror house of abuse and neglect. I'll share more soon but for now my message is simple: decarcerate.

The problem is that the pendulum just swings from one extreme to the other. “Lock em all up” to “decarcerate”. Extremes never work. I was involved in violent random assault in Manhattan. The perpetrator had a rap sheet a mile long (previous violent crimes). Yet he was out free.

No, the problem is the entire prison industrial complex, privatizing for profit prisons who’s existence is predicated not on rehabilitation (you know the “goal”) but in keeping each cell full, utilizing psychological torture through solitary & overall inhumane conditions

4% of the worlds population, 25% of its prisoners. Our bail system is fucked. Our court system is fucked. Our drug policies are fucked. It’s an endless list of shit. Look up Denmark. 60% of their prisons are open. Check the stats.https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vice.com/amp/en/article/d3dabz/adopting-denmarks-unorthodox-prison-system-could-benefit-ex-offenders-in-america …

I’m proud of our new progressive DA in San Francisco. Eliminated cash bail right away. It only jailed the poor innocents. And one person per cell due to Covid. Clear out the nonviolent or least offensive for that. #ChesaBoudin
