There's a similar phenomenon in ecommerce. People are more willing to pay $1 as part of something's price than they are to pay $1 for shipping.

Taking out debugging messages that are no longer needed can be a bigger performance win than you might think.

Part of me thinks that he did remove the message, tested it, and there was no performance win. He just shipped the commented change and people thought it was faster.

Meanwhile computerised chess games and the like have to put in an artificial pause to make it look like they are 'thinking' so as not to frustrate the human opponent too much :-)

Hah, I did this with http://iwl.me . People didn't believe that it actually did something with text because it was instant, so I inserted an interstitial page with a random timeout and "analyzing text" message.

Emacs still feels slow in 2020, especially if you use a lot of fancy third-party packages. The main reasons why it does not matter are (0) it is tolerably slow, (1) it is better to do what you actually want slowly, than to do something else altogether, even if faster.

Spot on! Like the way that Common Lisp programmers are obsessed with eliminating heap allocation partly because (TIME ...) reports not only time spent but also bytes allocated. That which is measured, is griped about...

Recalls fun times on the Emacs mailing list / Usenet group back in the 90s. Erik was a constant presence there and then, and his tirades were epic. Sadly, I believe he passed away in the 2000s.
