We’ve gotten a huge response to our story on hunger in Yemen, and how the Saudi-led war is pushing millions to the brink. Readers expressed shock or wanted to help. Some notes from the trip, and advice on how to donate: https://nyti.ms/2AvpRJP

This is Dr. Mekkia Mahdi, who cares for sick children the northwestern town of Aslam. She was angry. Why did the Saudi killing of Jamal Khashoggi get so much attention when millions of Yemeni children were dying? "Nobody gives a damn about them," she said.pic.twitter.com/E1y7AyEWAk

One of her patients, 7-year-old Amal Hussain, featured in a powerful portrait by @TylerHicksPhoto that led our story. I just learned that Amal has been discharged: the hospital had to make room for more needy cases, Dr. Mekkia said by phone.pic.twitter.com/6Yte8Xnww8

In the next ward lay an ailing five-month-old boy. He needed to be rushed to a bigger hospital run by MSF about 20 miles away. Dr. Mekkia wrapped the child in a foil blanket and handed him to his parents.pic.twitter.com/eZyQwBBt2Q

But the boy's parents had no money for the fare: economic collapse in Yemen has caused fuel prices to soar. Experts say the collapse is driven by Saudi-led policies to that seek to defeat the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels who control this area.pic.twitter.com/41DhnKvHyw

The couple left the hospital with their child to hitch a ride. Dr. Mekkia made some calls and found a car. But when we were leaving, soon after, we passed another hitchhiking couple carrying a sick child. We gave them a ride to their destination.

The immense suffering is in contrast to the spectacular beauty of northern Yemen, and to the daily life that continues in close proximity. In many towns we saw bustling markets and loud wedding celebrations - sometimes just a few yards from a hospital where children lay dyingpic.twitter.com/O9C4KWOoyl

Experts say that's typical of this crisis. There are no camps filled with starving people, like in Ethiopia in the '80s, but dispersed starvation, in deep pockets scattered around the country. Huge numbers are affected: 8m today, maybe 14m in a few months, says the UN.pic.twitter.com/Z8B9VHSmo5

It was shocking to see he had burned his three-year-old son, in accordance with a local folk remedy, to cure him of starvation-related illness. Mr. Hajaji told me he felt he had little choice. "I was desperate," he said.pic.twitter.com/VdfkMKyu9g

Above all, he wanted to avoid the death of a second son. He brought us to the grave of Shaadi, 4, who had died three weeks earlier. it was a beautiful spot, with a single stone marking the child's grave.pic.twitter.com/dsjSZQrM5T

If you want to contribute to one of the relief agencies working in Yemen, often under challenging conditions, @aodhanbeirne has some suggestions:http://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/27/world/middleeast/yemen-how-to-help.html …
