D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Lewis Ferebee sent an email to families this morning saying the city voluntarily gave up its federal Head Start grant. He says it won't affect the number of city's pre-K seats

More background: DCPS received about a $14 million Head Start grant this school year. Ferebee says the city was expected to receive half or less than half of that next year.

Having served on the DCPS ECE Policy Council for two years & briefly serving as chair before resigning. There are many issues with how our school system deflects some of the pillar elements of the Head Start Model, including the obligations to serve 10% students w/ disabilities.

I’m not surprised by this at all. Disappointed, yes. Heartbroken, yes. Yet definitely not surprised.
