Met up with @Iron_Spike at @bdangouleme - @ironcircuscomix has a booth in the foreign rights tent . We also had dinner w/ @JeremyMelloulpic.twitter.com/Vyf4L6xod5

Tsuge’s son Shosuke is here at Angouleme along with Asakawa-san, but apparently, even up ‘til the last minute, everyone was not sure that the 83-year old creator would make the trip to @bdangouleme. Tsuge was visibly moved to revisit his works like thispic.twitter.com/qGaCo58Dzb
Shosuke Tsuge has played a big role in how his father’s work is now available in other languages and his original art is on display at @bdangouleme - he apparently painstakingly re-pasted the typesetting in the word balloons that fell off the stored originals - a year of workpic.twitter.com/1oqO1h74l1
In the gallery watching Tsuge looking at his work was other @bdangouleme festival guests like Inio Asano, Charles Burns and Hisashi Eguchi. Tsuge is famously reclusive & reportedly uninterested in his acclaim in the world of comics... i wonder if this trip changes that?pic.twitter.com/eASCzdV0LW
I certainly hope that this Tsuge art exhibit at @bdangouleme travels to other countries and that the art book gets translated. Both are impeccably presented and are an eye-opening retrospective of this manga legendpic.twitter.com/oExcjdFyUg
Astoundingly, Tsuge stopped creating manga in 1987. I asked Asakawa-san if he had any idea why a man who was passionate about exploring the boundaries of visual storytelling decided to just quit, and i never got a clear answer. Tsuge the man, like his manga, is a mystery.pic.twitter.com/TaMToKE7ab
I visited the @ed_cornelius booth at @bdangouleme and saw this page in Shigeru Mizuki’s biography where he’s talking with Yoshiharu Tsuge (who was a peer & sometime-drawing assistant). Tsuge *does* have a long face and a middle part!pic.twitter.com/v4pndgMXwR
More fabulous original pages from the Yoshiharu Tsuge exhibit at @bdangouleme - get ready to read these stories and more in French fr. @ed_cornelius and in English fr @DandQpic.twitter.com/2BiSEGNBSH
One floor above the Tsuge exhibit at @bdangouleme was a retrospective of American comics creator Wally Wood - dazzling to see so many famous stories up close! https://www.bdangouleme.com/exposition-mondes-wallace-wood …pic.twitter.com/hq8lGQbZbp
Wally Wood had such an amazing career: war comics, sci-fi, Mad Magazine parodies, Marvel comics, raunchy comics and more - it’s all on display at the Angouleme Museum as part of @bdangoulemepic.twitter.com/WfWodo97Mp
It was heartbreaking to see a fire-singed page of sketches by Wally Wood on display - some of his work was lost in a fire. Wood was also an alcoholic who died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head. Read @fantagraphics “The Life & Legend of Wallace Wood” http://www.fantagraphics.com/the-life-and-legend-of-wallace-wood/ …pic.twitter.com/R22Laq5Q1H
After many days of dark clouds and drizzly rain, the sun came out briefly at @bdangouleme on Saturday ( incidentally, the busiest day of the show)pic.twitter.com/q0u1QExRY0
Walked down the hill to Manga City at @bdangouleme, where i met up with @Comics212 to see whats new & what will likely never be published in Englishpic.twitter.com/1eWbLGpPO6
“Lady Boy vs Yakuza” — yeaaaahhhhh, this one is a long shot for an English release, but @AKATAmanga takes up the challenge of publishing this over-the-top story of a yakuza who gets a forced sex change & is sent to an island full of pervs(?) i think?

.@Comics212 and I were impressed by the Taiwan comics displays at @bdangouleme Manga City - great variety of styles and stories . See more here: https://bit.ly/2RRgv3A pic.twitter.com/MktlV4BUVc
Beautiful collaboration kimono by Baron Yoshimoto & Katsuya Terada at @bdangouleme Manga City. Yoshimoto was also doing live painting of a large mural. (He was on break when i dropped by)pic.twitter.com/grsFggbXbK
Taiwan Comics artist Yu-Shi Wu did a live drawing demo at @bdangouleme Manga City toopic.twitter.com/rUUZO6xptx
There was manga to be found at @bdangouleme outside of Manga City - In the Nouvelle Monde (New World) tent, @lezardnoir was showcasing Hisashi Eguchi ‘s “Stop!! Hibari-kun!” and the manga that inspired the netflix foodie series, “Midnight Diner”pic.twitter.com/EgwSb3UKfo – mjesto: Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême
Also in the Nouvelle Monde tent at @bdangouleme : manga by Shigeru Mizuki, including his autobiographical stories, Prince Norman by Osamu Tezuka, and manga by Yoshiharu Tsuge from @ed_corneliuspic.twitter.com/3ORknZXMGY
Another manga long shot for an English: Docteur Toilette / Toilet Hakase by Kazuyoshi Torii, which is chock-full of poop jokes - @ed_cornelius had this “ewww” inducing 1970’s Shonen Jump series in French for sale at Angouleme https://www.cornelius.fr/catalogue/docteur-toilette/ …pic.twitter.com/igwhufy65X
Manga i bought at @bdangouleme : Les Temps Retrovés by Kei Fujii & Cocoro Hirai from @ki_oon_Editions about two people who rediscover love late in life - 2 volume series with lovely color art http://www.ki-oon.com/news/476-temps-retrouves-rides-et-romance-cohabitent.html …pic.twitter.com/cOUXQwKCMP
I also got Shotaro Ishinomori’s biography manga of Hokusai fr @EditionsKana at @bdangouleme Manga City. Fantastic all-in-one edition, masterfully drawn by the creator of Kamen Rider https://www.kana.fr/produit/hokusai/ …pic.twitter.com/X35CiPZ4Dd
Also saw several books by Jiro Taniguchi in the main publishers’ tent at @bdangouleme - i picked up “nos compagnons” (our companions), a heart-rending collection of short stories about pets fr @CastermanBD https://www.casterman.com/Bande-dessinee/Catalogue/ecritures/nos-compagnons …pic.twitter.com/B5zcNHIwUt
“Le Monde des Bulles” (The World of Bubbles, probably referring to word balloons) is the main publishers tent at @bdangouleme, where there are large displays and many artist signings. We went on Sunday, when it was much less crowdedpic.twitter.com/wFM86GP9Cq
In the evening, the Angouleme Center Ville (City Hall) gets lit up with some stunning animated video projections celebrating @bdangouleme festivalpic.twitter.com/Lx7UCWSRVA – mjesto: Hôtel de ville d'Angoulême
A fun @bdangouleme pickup at the @CastermanBD - a pocketbook guide to the Internet by Jean-Noel LaFargue & Mathieu Burniat - there were also books on heavy metal, anarchism and more from @LeLombard https://www.lelombard.com/incontournable/la-petite-bedetheque-des-savoirs …pic.twitter.com/KX5z3Q4fSw
Also at Angouleme City Hall/Hotel de Ville - the Magic Mirrors, a pop-up party space that has DJs, dancing and comics creators galore. We peeked in on the @comixology party on Friday nightpic.twitter.com/c8fbCgml1J – mjesto: Hôtel de ville d'Angoulême
.@Comixace was impressed by @Panini_fr ‘s intro to @Marvel characters collections, seen at @bdangouleme. Each hardcover volume collects essential stories, old & new feat. movie faves Avengers, Black Panther, etc for new readers (this is not done in US) “This sells very well”pic.twitter.com/d6Q7AMD5l6
Also at @bdangouleme 2020 (but unfortunately, I missed) was Kan Takahama, who signed copies of L’amant (The Lover), an adaptation of the novel set in French Indochina in 1929 by Margurite Duras. Read a preview: https://www.editions-ruedesevres.fr/lamant pic.twitter.com/SY5Acrw5s0
