I just talked to a friend's daughter on the phone about UNC my alma mater and former workplace. My advice was to focus a little LESS on what she wants to do in the future (could change) and focus more on where she will be happiest and thrive. Can't buy happiness, you know?

But that might be a very privileged way of looking at things.I acknowledge that.

Fairly simple, visited a couple near-ish colleges, chose the one that gave me the most scholarship money.

That's what I did too. Otherwise I couldn't have gone to college. Fortunately,
@OKCU was a fantastic fit for me.

I was 15, so didn't feel ready to go away to school.
@Penn was, I believed, the best school in the area. (Had no college counseling to speak of to suggest a liberal arts college instead.) Applied early decision, got in, done. Worked out well. I spent 12 years, got a BA, MSE, PhDThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Had no idea what I wanted to do, so I looked for schools with a broad range of strengths. Wanted to be within an easy drive for a weekend visit, so looked inside of a 4 hr radius. Went on visits, trusted my gut. Applied 5 places, picked the place that offered most $$.

I got sent 250+ mailers my junior year. As a music student I also searched the webs for pretty pictures, fun opportunities. Applied to 3. Auditioned at 2. Ultimately went with the place that was cheap (read free). They also had recruited me since Y1 HS through many music camps.

Visited 4 large publics, didn’t think we could afford private (no clue about discounting). Slept on a floor at 1, got spit on at 1, didn’t want to go back to HS at 1, & then saw
@DrewBledsoe beat uw in the snow while getting my car fixed at Sears. Decision made.#WaveTheFlagThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I narrowed it down to the two that offered the best financial aid and scholarship packages. I toured one and hated it, so I committed to the other without visiting and saw it for the first time on Orientation.
-
Very similar. Took the best financial aid package and then got (the best) job on campus. No tour, paid $$ to commit before orientation. Do low income, 1G students really get other choices?
