Another LED bulb disaster. Put two into garage door. One doesn't work. The other flickers when the motor is running and turns off otherwise.

@ddribin Just had a Cree bulb with a 10-year warranty die after 8 months. Another is flickering. Hard to actually use the warranty.

@mjtsai @ddribin Whyis it hard to use the warranty?

@foresmac @ddribin They also want the UPC from the original packaging, whereas I only have the receipt.

@mjtsai @foresmac Yeah, I didn't even bother checking warranty. Figured it would be a PITA. Who keeps receipts and/or UPCs for light bulbs?

      7. Michael Tsai ‏@mjtsai 8 Dec 2015

@ddribin @foresmac So it turns out that, despite what the warranty says, Cree is going to send me a new bulb without returning the old one.

@mjtsai @foresmac Nice! Did you file a support ticket or something? I'm not sure if I already threw mine out.

@ddribin @foresmac Yes, just filled out the support form on their Web site.

I might start stockpiling incandescents to last for the next 10 years. Maybe, by then, they'll come up with LEDs that don't suck.

        @ddribin what about florescent?

      4. Dave Dribin ‏@ddribin 6 Dec 2015

@mlabowicz Yeah, I could go CFLs for non-dimmable uses. For dimmable, only incandescent seems to work.

@ddribin @mlabowicz CFLs are the spawn of the devil. I never met one that didn't trigger a migraine.

      1. Michael Ledford ‏@mledford 6 Dec 2015

@ddribin I think this is probably more a function of bad power from the garage door opener than the bulbs. Lots of little power surges…

      2. Dave Dribin ‏@ddribin 6 Dec 2015

@mledford Probably. But incandescents had no problem. Switched to another LED brand, and they worked. Lower wattage, unfortunately.

      3. Michael Ledford ‏@mledford 6 Dec 2015

@ddribin Dirty or improper voltage probably won’t affect incandescent like it would voltage regulated electronics. Just my theory…

      4. Dave Dribin ‏@ddribin 6 Dec 2015

@mledford Sure, just sayin' it shouldn't matter. LEDs should be just as tolerant.

@MrRooni @ddribin That’s a bit crazy. I’ve found great LED light brands and my apartment is 100% low wattage now.

@kevinhoctor @MrRooni I've tried a bunch of non-cheap LEDs. Never had anything dim well. A bunch buzz loudly. And some don't work at all.

@ddribin @kevinhoctor @MrRooni you need special ones for dimming b/c dimmers tend to work by chopping AC waveform with triacs.

      7. Dave Dribin ‏@ddribin 6 Dec 2015

@al45tair @kevinhoctor @mrrooni I've spent a small fortune on special dimmers and dimmable LED bulbs. Every combo I've tried stinks.

@ddribin @al45tair @MrRooni To be fair, I don’t use any dimmers. I’m just enjoying the low electric bills. Paid $18 to PG&E last month.
