The rhetorical education that people received in the ancient world would be unrecognisable to people today... except to a few people like Boris Johnson. It goes a long way to explaining his approach to politics. Me

I wish people would stop using Galileo as the example of someone persecuted for upholding an empirically-proven truth. The reality is pretty much the opposite: the Inquisition demanded soli empirical evidence - which Galileo was unable to provide.

GK Chesterton has a version of Lacordaire’s principle: “If we wish to protect the poor we shall be in favour of fixed rules and clear dogmas. The rules of a club are occasionally in favour of the poor member. The drift of a club is always in favour of the rich one.”

Some women’s religious orders are growing fast: one study found that from 2002 to 2007 numbers rose in 99 countries. But are we doing enough to support them?

There could be a High Court judgment this week on the police’s recording of “hate incidents”, which “can go on an individual’s police record, despite potentially being based on a single complaint which has not been proved or tested in the courts.”

27/1/74: The Chinese are quite right to denounce Beethoven as a class enemy seeking to undermine the workers' dictatorship by encouraging certain "spontaneous tendencies towards capitalism". I shall listen to nothing but the pop group called Slade while these uncertainties last.

A grieving 33-year-old woman falls for a priest. The plot of Fleabag makes it sound truly terrible – which in several important respects it is. But the show also contains some startling moments of real theological insight. Today’s column:

The Stephen Oylbut story is in Catholic London by Douglas Newton. He suggests that London was a city of strong local patriotisms: the churches grew out of house chapels, so it ended up with lots of densely packed parishes.

London used to have a custom of naming abandoned babies after the place in which they were found: so a girl left in Mutton Court was christened Mary Mutton. In the 17th century, one little lad dumped on top of an oil barrel in the parish of St Stephen’s became Stephen Oylbut.

This article is in a league of its own. By far the best-informed, most nuanced thing I’ve read on Amazonian spirituality and the Church:

Wonderful little essay here by Fr. Cameron, OP: “The key is to remember that hope is not directed toward a change in our circumstances but toward the possibility that we can be changed within those circumstances.“

Award-winning historian and Yale professor Carlos Eire on Pope Francis: “What I find very odd...is that he’s a Jesuit and yet the Jesuit tradition has for so long emphasized being careful.” On doctrine, Eire says Francis “is probably skating on the thinnest ice” of any pope ever.

Happy . Rightly revered as a journalist. Probably a bit overrated as a political thinker. Definitely very underrated as a critic of contraception, which he saw as a supreme example of how capitalism ruins everything:
