Would Taiwan risk invasion by China to tighten its relationship with the US? Short of nuclear war, militarily protecting Taiwan is likely a logistical impossibility in the face of actual invasion.

Without Philippines along for the ride, Taiwan's value to us is just as a rock. But Taiwan is technically still US commonwealth. Ergo war is likely. Seems a smarter, surprise move would be for US to move into Hong Kong, claiming violations.
