This is a specific specie of cicada. I grew up in Maryland and they do emerge every 17 years. It's odd for sure, but this isn't a Q relation to the number - this one is an actual coincidence.

Timing is everything, even better than location, location, location. Is cicades simiiar to a plague of locusts? By the way which three states are we referring?

It’s in the article. VA, NC, SC. I’ve lived in NC all my life, our cicadas must be rebels because I see at least some every year. My chickens love them. When they grab them they squeal. It’s crazy

Get this, Cicadas use prime number lifecycles 13 and 17 years so their broods overlap the least amount of times. They are here every year but some years are packed. More Fibonacci sequence in nature.
