The difference, of course, is that 1776 was a break with a great tradition - and we have seen, in these late days, just where that departure has arrived. Unlike the Jonathans, the UK is not breaking with, but restoring a great, noble and promising tradition.

I don't understand the reference -perhaps the supposed betters advocating a negotiated peace and the working people wouldn't have stood for it, but it wasnt like Churchill actually faced the electorate until the working people booted him out in 1945.
