My dad’s family spoke German at home. He was bullied and made fun of so much in school for knowing German he refused to speak it anymore at home and it’s why he’s not fluent.

My mother was told (by her Chicago Public Schools) techer that if she wanted to lose her dirty (Mexican) accent she should take German. It just goes to show that it was never about right/wrong, or good/bad -- it was always about control.

In a world where latinos are shamed and harassed in public places by Americans screaming SPEAK ENGLISH, it’s a real fear I can tell his family likely grew up with. I’m glad he has the platform to talk about it now and not pass on the fear to his children
