One side has been violating that treaty, making it a piece of paper, not worth the writing on it. So being tethered to it was useless, especially as the other side was using it to their advantage and getting stronger, as we are getting further behind lessening our own deterrent

Well, one former superpower has been ignoring the rules for years. The remaining actual superpower decided to say enough is enough and responded in kind. But for many of a certain political persuasion, everything is always America's fault.

Is it better that one side violates it and is untethered? Why do people want the US in meaningless treaties?

No, the last thing we need is what we have. Two super powers in this agreement, one (USA) that adheres to the agreement and one (Russia) that violates the agreement

There is 3 super powers, one that’s not in this contract, and one that doesn’t give a hoot. U.S. is # 3

As opposed to everyone else already doing it? What good is a treaty the limits what you can do if only one side follows it?
