Why would an editor for any reporter above a third-grade level feel the need to copy and paste portions of another article so the reporter could somehow glean their approach from the other writer? This “explanation” makes no sense.

And the "corrected story" wasn't checked again before publication, to ensure the reporter followed the editor's instructions? I don't know how the news business works, but I thought that's what editors do.
