        That's really funny. China rarely develops intellectual property of its own. If they want something that is, by law, the property of another country, they just steal it. And WE'RE being "selfish" about enforcing our rights.

        The problem is that China represents a HUGE potential market, but at the core remains a closed, socialist, society where property rights are transitory, fluid, and subject to change at any time. Since all patents are eventually published, not filing in China has no impact. (1/2)

        Some companies file in China & hope that Chinese courts will offer some protection at some point. However, there is little that can be done to prevent Chinese companies from outright theft and copying of intellectual property for consumption in the Chinese marketplace. (2/2)

        The countries w/ the strongest IP laws (generally the EU and the US) can be protected via patent rights, but even combined, the US & EU represent a smaller potential market than China alone. Sadly, Chinese IP is a microcosm for what happens to all property rights under socialism.
