Setting aside the intrusiveness, I cannot remotely remember even the attempt to monitor attendance at lectures. Is that even a thing?

Not when I went to college (tho in my case, Pomona is so small in most classes it was obvious if you were absent). The article does note *parent* interest in attendance checks, or at least liking that schools are tracking their kids even if mom & dad can't see the data

My own hot take: I would bet (a) the overwhelming majority of campuses aren't doing this at all and (b) the overwhelming majority of staff and faculty don't know it's happening even on the campuses where it's happening.
