  2. The restrictive land use regulations championed by self-styled "progressives" in many blue cities are best understood as a tool white people use to increase racial segregation.

  5. I love 's work on cosmopolitanism. Thanks for the shout-out to my work w/ and , too! We found these survey questions were surprisingly predictive of many attitudes and a huge divide between the tech elite and other samples.

Conversations with people who are not with us on LGBTQ issues are hard but are a key to progress, and the research shows it. So proud that worked with and on this important research. 1/

"If you want to change someone's mind, you need to have patience with them, ask them to reflect on their life, & listen. It’s not about calling people out." Experimental evidence on immigration & trans rights: News/video: Paper:

This is such important research. It is possible to talk people out of bigotry. But the method that seems to work is time-intensive, emotionally difficult, and requires a lot of careful work to keep people from reacting defensively.

This research is a rich resource for political campaigns. But most refreshing to me, is that it gives us a new script to talk to people who we disagree with, and whose opinions are hurtful to people we care about From

  11. Last comment. This work was a team effort with the folks at New Conversation Initiative, and many more. They deserve so much credit for this. Their work is so inspiring, and we have learned so much from them. (7/7)

  12. 4. We also study a new issue: attitudes towards unauthorized immigrants. We found similar effects, despite this exp being conducted as Trump was talking about the caravan during the midterms. 5. In most studies, persuasion decays rapidly. We found no decay for months. (6/7)

  13. 3. We also conceptually replicate the “non-judgmental exchange of narratives” in three ways: in person, by phone, and with videos shown in person. This strategy works in all these forms. It’s not specific to any one kind of narrative or delivery mechanism. (5/7)

  14. 2. Interventions often work when first studied but not at scale or w/ new partners. Our new paper studies conversations scaled to ~7k voters and implemented by 230 canvassers working with 7 community groups nationwide, none of whom/which had done used this approach before. (4/7)

  15. From a training: “make it clear we’re not there to judge them and we’re curious about their honest experience, whatever it is.” These convos involve listening to people, not talking at them. They don’t involve “calling out”; showing respect is intended to facilitate change. (3/7)

  16. 1. Non-judgmentally sharing stories is what makes these conversations effective - when this is removed, they stop working. Some have called what we studied in our 2016 Science paper “deep canvassing.” These results show the “deep” part is key. What does that look like? (2/7)
