Fascinating. That seems like some real insanity there. How is did they think it was possible given the huge British war debt to the US? Did they say?

The UK was ahead of everyone with technology. They traded it all for the use of US factories during the war, but the outcome wasn’t known yet.

This is why I have a soft (and critical) spot for the "revisionists" - so much of the discussion during and right after WWII is the fear of economic competition.
