Corona Virus + democracy - a thread: It’s petitioning season in NY State. Every candidate needs hundreds -- sometimes thousands -- of signatures by the end of March, to get on the ballot. I’m running for District Leader, a volunteer position in the Democratic Party...
I am required to get 500 signatures to make the ballot, but independent candidates like me are told to get 2x or 3x that number, because machine-backed incumbents will use undemocratic means, expensive lawyers, and technicalities to throw us off the ballot.
On Sunday I was out petitioning and door-knocking for 12 hours straight with our campaign volunteers. I got 100+ signatures. That’s 100 people passing a pen and a clipboard back and forth, that’s hundreds more doors and doorbells touched by me and our volunteers.
Every day I look for ways to be safe and keep my neighbors safe while I petition. Outside I wear gloves. I purell and wipe down the pens. Today I bought boxes of pens and gave a new one to each person who signed.

We shouldn’t have to choose between serving and keeping our communities safe. Along with dozens of other NY State candidates, we are urging @NYGovCuomo @NYSBOE to suspend or curtail petitioning. This is not political, it’s about public health.

Many of us were planning to file petitions in person with the BOE on March 30th. There's likely going to be a lot of people there. I'm wondering whether it's such a good idea. What else can we do? Even if we can mail them, there are problems with that too.
