I think this is a key point often missed by people who object to leftist criticism of Dems. The point isn’t that a politician with bad policies is forever tainted and could never earn your vote. The point is to pressure them to embrace better policies.

I have a wrinkle to add: journalists’ job is to accurately report facts, and part of having journalistic impact is when those facts compel voters to pressure public officials on issues and policy. This is part of the democratic process — or at least it used to be.
-
Yes, and people can disagree about the salience of those facts, but the facts still need to be reported, so that people can make up their own minds.

The “concept”?
Sounds like how he supports “access” to affordable healthcare.
Maybe you should stop giving time to #neoliberal hacks like@BetoORourke and pay attention to@_SemaHernandez_? You missed her last go round.#SemaForTexas -
@davidsirota I love your work, but you do need to cover Sema’s campaign against Cornyn. Sema won 24% of the Dem primary against Beto spending >10k. She worked with Beto and moved him to the left. Real Texas Progressives supported Beto bc of her endorsement.#Sema2020

Although the pressure is definitely good, this gives him just enough wiggle room to later say that even though he supports the "concept" he doesn't believe a GND to be practical. But we'll see..
-
Agreed. Also the choice to roll out this announcement via a spokesperson rather than speaking the words himself allows O’Rourke to distance himself even more. It’s such a detached statement that I’m not sure it qualifies as pandering. Feels more like pseudo pandering.
-
Similar to how Beto O'Rourke didn't cosponsor
#MedicareForAll but supports the "concept." -
Right. Because he doesn’t know if he’s a progressive.

What does it mean to be "supportive of the concept"? That's a politician's statement if I've ever heard one.
-
And I like Beto. But more than ever I'm interested in honesty and directness.

It's almost like someone holding him publicly accountable for his actions is a good thing. Almost...

He supports the "concept" does he? Worthless double-speak. This is the equivalent of "access to health care".

#Sema4TX#Sema2020 Don't forget to mention@Sema4Texas . She always honored the#NoFossilFuelMoney pledge she already made in 2018#Sema4TX#Sema2020 .https://twitter.com/_SemaHernandez_/status/1081172607486099456 …Thanks. Twitter will use this info to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

It would take a lot more than words for him to expect us to believe this 'evolvement'. Watch what they DO not what their political handlers tell them to SAY!
-
Agreed. Saying something and following through on it are two different things.

@BetoORourke "Supportive of the concept of a#GreenNewDeal" is not good enough. If you want voters to be supportive of the concept of you for POTUS you will have to pledge a commitment to inaction a#GreenNewDeal. Otherwise, give up now & find a job in the private sector.Thanks.
