Although to be fair. They recognize everything abroad and have common law marriage

Though it's something of a civil-unions situation in that it isn't 100% equal. Most of the country (everyone except for the Haredi and the arabs) supports creating a civil marriage authority, but it never happens because proportional representation is badhttps://twitter.com/davidshor/status/680603939327336448 …

To talk about that more, they're the only party that historically was willing to coalition with either the left or the right as long as they got what they wanted on subsidies/military exception/religious authority stuff, so their parties have been part of every coalition since 48
-
That was true 30 years ago. Today the Haredis are part of the right-wing bloc. Likud doesn't do civil marriage because it doesn't want to.
-
Yeah, I said “historically” for a reason. (As an aside, Aryeh Deri is my third cousin!)

Definitely the way to change this narrow issue of Israeli domestic politics is to attract more criticism internationally. For people who don't know anything, Israel acknowledges such marriages from abroad so in practice people just take a little vacation with cheap airfare.
-
If you proposed a $300 tax on interfaith marriages in the US you would be brutally de-platformed and be loudly condemned by every institution with power in the entire country.

Among less liberal Israelis there is a taboo against marrying Arabs, although it is not nearly as strong as the inverse taboo. I am not aware of a taboo against intermarriage in general that is stronger than what you would find among comparably religious people in the diaspora.

Hiloni doesn't track liberalism especially well.

The whole "Arabs and Jews go to totally different school systems, the former of which historically have been heavily underfunded" thing is also pretty wild by western standards

The majority want it but it's nigh on impossible to form a government without the haredim.

-
also, the muslims and christians are probably just as, if not more in favor of religion based marriage than the jews.
-
Not *as* extreme as the Haredi but yeshttps://twitter.com/davidshor/status/680603939327336448 …

So if the potential spouse converts and will keep Jewish laws and customs, it doesn't matter?
-
In theory yes, but it has to be an Orthodox conversion, which is an expensive multi-year process and involves adhering to customs (like for example, not being allowed to listen to women sing on saturdays) that most Jews don’t accept
-
what a fascinating phenomenon! thank you for the thorough response.
