The thing that’s so threatening about discussions of cultural appropriation is that they are directed at people who have largely abandoned their culture in favor of privilege.

Max, as someone proud of your Irish heritage, I wonder if you’ve got thoughts on the many white Americans who now identify themselves as Irish or Scots without any known ancestry of same (or much of it), in order to not be just white American.

Honestly, I think it’s because Irishness is partially a marketing phenomenon with a low bar to entry. Anyone can hang out at an Irish pub.

Agreed. I wonder if there’s anything about it that irks or offends you? I feel sympathy toward the impulse to do that, to find something that isn’t just “white” to identify with.

No, I don’t mind it. We all have our starting points. And a good Irish pub is a surprisingly effective gateway into more specific expressions of Irish culture.

In my drinking days I used to say I’d drunk enough of your whiskey be part Irish. That lovely land is on my list of countries to visit despite, a sober friend telling me that visiting Ireland without drinking is like telling the perfect woman, “Let’s just be friends.”

(Of course I know there is far more to Ireland than great comestibles that I can no longer afford to comest.)
