I was reviewing cases for expungement today and was absolutely astounded that fifteen years ago a predecessor was sentencing under age drinkers to prison terms.

No one should be surprised that this woman has likely been condemned to die of cancer in prison over petty retail theft. Decades of never interrogating whether mass incarceration makes us safer has effectively rendered the system incapable of doing so.

Ask yourself which is more reprehensible—possessing drugs or framing someone for possessing drugs while simultaneously violating your oath to protect and to serve? There are two answers: the sane one, and the one our criminal justice system provides:

A NYS Judge in Albany was so apoplectic that bail reform prevented him from setting bail that he sua sponte declared the law unconstitutional as applied to a *driving with a suspended license* case. You know, the most dangerous of traffic misdemeanors!

So much worse than I thought. Headlines yesterday screamed “Free to Rape!” But the man “paraded in front of press” wasn’t arrested or charged w/ any sex offense. It was NYPD propaganda to kill bail reform aided by desperate, sensationalist tabloids.

It’s funny. The very same law enforcement caste that acts so punitively and treats other people’s freedom so casually, finds empathy when a member of its own caste is ensnared within the system.

Wow. In a sign of changing times and a reflection of the power of the progressive prosecutor movement, SEVEN Virginia DAs urge the legislature to abolish the death penalty. Notable: In the modern era, VA has executed more ppl than any state except TX.

Glad to see The New Yorker report on one of the most drastic yet underreported aspects of the opioid crisis: charging sellers with drug-induced homicide/drug delivery resulting in death. This is a wrong approach to addressing the crisis.

A 15th person being incarcerated at a Mississippi state prison has died since December 29. A 39yo man was found lying unresponsive in his cell. This is the fifth person to have died in custody in just over a week. Inhumane. Unacceptable.

Thread. This is the same Houston drug cop whose lies led to a raid in which police shot and killed two innocent people. He was on the force for 12 years, likely corrupted 1000s of cases. I doubt he acted alone.

President Trump has ruled on 204 clemency requests while in office—the “slowest pace in decades,” according to a Washington Post analysis. “I almost wish it would get denied. At least I would know that someone had looked at it.”
