A reminder that, according to HESA statistics covering 2015-6 and 2016-7, UK universities have been hanging onto total reserves of £44+ billion, of which £31+ billion is "unrestricted". Any reason why UK universities are doing this?

"If [labor] militants in the 1920s had not persisted, even as they were marked as pariahs in their shops, the heroic 1930s would never have come about." A reminder for all those organizing in dark and darkening times.

The income of the poorest US households fell from 42% of the poverty line in 1989 to only 29% in 2016. In 2016, the floor was equivalent to about $11,800 a year, or $9.40 a day.

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez was one of the first candidates to support abolishing ICE. She led on the issue. Simple clear moral demands and tirelesss organizing wins elections.

Worth pointing out, also, that this story's understanding of how Ocasio-Cortez won is, shall we say, limited. It invokes the handful of endorsements she received and favorable lefty web news coverage, but not the army of campaign volunteers she built through organizing.

Everyone should canvass way more. I’ve knocked on thousands of doors in the last decade. You get good at it with practice, and being good at it means learning how to actually connect with people in very little time, which is meaningful and powerful

I was at this special USS meeting of UCU & there were SO MANY ppl who had never attended or spoke at a UCU event like this before - me included. Genuinely felt like the buzz of change was in the air. Engaged, informed & with fire in our bellies. Gives me faith in our future.

I was skeptical until I verified these clippings at . In 1934, influential religious figures in US argued that Germans did not hate Jews but only supported Hitler out of economic anxiety, & that Jews would be fine if they'd just be civil to Nazis & show good will.
