That's not accurate. Assuming you're referring to AR-15s, almost all are chambered in 223/5.56mm. Those produce around 1000 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle. It's not uncommon for handguns to reach or even top that. Yes, handgun bullets are slower, but they're much, much heavier.
