Mentally ill is a catch-all phrase for a lot of different mental health statuses, including a majority that would not create an enhanced propensity toward violence. In most cases w/ a mental illness/ violence nexus, the tendency or desire for violence was known. Flagging is key.

Yes. So much respect for Mr. Hogg & the fight he is fighting. But, empirically speaking, mental illness has no association w/ community-level violence.

There are nearly 200 categories of mental illness, some, like dyslexia, or phobias or stuttering or Aspergers have no violent tendencies associated with them. Because of HIPAA privacy laws, mental illness is not a consideration during background checks.

We’d not only have to forego our privacy rights, but there are many types of MIs that are rarely diagnosed or treated (i.e.: sociopaths) and they’re the ones I’d most like to keep from obtaining guns. Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s an easy answer to the MI question.

Love what you’re doing in general, but, no, I don’t think that’s a thing we in the gun control movement can agree on… Attempts to restrict gun ownership w/r/t mental health will just encourage stigma and keep people from getting help. Let’s focus on the guns, not who has them.

I think a registry in the same way that we do background checks would be a bad idea. I have bipolar disorder, and I don’t want a gun .. 2/

But I certainly don’t want there to be a list that includes me and everyone that has faced mental illness - could lead to discrimination
