I think many of the issues Americans face today are class issues disguised as racial issues to divide poor white people and poor people of color.

I appreciate the passionate responses to this tweet and know I have much more to learn. Not to mention the how the shear complexity and scale of socioeconomic issues we as a country face today can not be explained in a tweet.

David, here’s an assignment I gave my media students: For 2weeks, get your news from black newspapers, listen only to black media figures. Read only tweets from black activists. Immerse yourself in the world through black eyes. Don’t debate, just listen. Your world will change.

This is wise advice. I have learned so much. I thought I was an ally, but I was an ignorant ally. I am so grateful to have access to the voices you list above; they definitely deserve amplification.

At the risk of not getting it right myself, to rephrase your tweet’s sentiment: race IS used as a cudgel to divide and manipulate socio-economic classes, but also, belief in racial superiority is used to limit the rights of racial groups and deny them class mobility.
