I appreciate the passionate responses to this tweet and know I have much more to learn. Not to mention the how the shear complexity and scale of socioeconomic issues we as a country face today can not be explained in a tweet.

No David. America was built on the foundation of white supremacy. Genocide of Native Americans, enslavement of Africans, dehumanization of Blacks and the lasting effects of each, buoyed by systemic racism, is a RACE issue, not a class issue.https://twitter.com/davidhogg111/status/1202939096017956867 …

The fact that a white man with a high school diploma will make more money than a black man with a college degree is a race issue. The fact that Black men are nine times more likely to be arrested prosecuted and imprisoned then their white counterparts is a RACE issue.

Hi David, this is an old analysis and is completely inaccurate. I can only imagine that it is offensive to those who are subjected to racism in this country. Please take some courses on both the history of racism, as well as how this history manifests in our present.

A good place to start would be, of course, slavery. It would also be good to ask whether or not our country instituted apartheid (Jim Crow) in order to prevent class solidarity or whether there was other motivation.

No. He’s a kid. He’s out here learning at a speed and with consequences few of us have ever faced. He’s the future. If we don’t kindly, with respect, teach him he’ll never learn. And he’s willing to learn. Let’s support his journey.

Those in power definitely pit those in the middle and lower classes against each other, but I think it's important not to discount the institutional racism that actually exists and has for centuries.

You're right, but racism does not exist outside of the class issue. The people on top use, create, encourage racism in order to maintain power.

Wealthy people disagree because if there is only a race issue, their compensation isn’t questioned. But if it’s also a class issue, then that would mean they’re overpaid and not actually as valuable as they thought they were. And that can’t be possible in their minds.
