It's not unique to the US by any means. Every totalitarian communist regime has convinced its citizens that it had gotten them free from oppression. I remember as a kid in USSR singing, "I don't know any other country where people breathe so freely." I had no idea.

It's amazing how skilled propagandists are at convincing those imprisoned to believe that they're actually free. I remember reading a copy of "Soviet Life" as a sophomore in H.S. I was struck by how happy the workers on the magazine's cover appeared to be. Deception is powerful
