i agree they should be. Tip: many times, you can email (one of) the author(s) of a paper and they will send you a pdf. (They don't make any money from the journal gatekeeping, so most of the time they are happy to send you a free copy)

Also, any article derived from federally funded research (NIH, DOD, etc) has to be submitted to PubMed Central (PMC) for full-text release. Check it out! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/

They publish research with public health implications, often funded with taxpayer money, and make it inaccessible to the public. In the meantime, they enlist academics like myself to provide free labor through peer review. It’s an absurd arrangement.

I used my library but some of them they just don’t provide cause they’re too expensive and you fricken have to request it and sometimes they’ll deny it. Cause it’s too expensive and/or hard to get. I’m currently goin through this

My public library card gets me access behind the paywall to academic journal databases, more than I can fathom. Haven't yet found one I've wanted which was unavailable.
