Social media’s a great form of communication but it has done and is doing some serious damage to our democracy. The algorithms these sites use are built to keep you on as long a possible and nothing does that better than conflict and division. I don’t know how we fix it.
Of course I don’t blame these sites for wanting to keep us on as long as possible because they want to make as much money as possible. But I do think there need to be some legal limitations on what data campaigns have access to and what they can advertise.
So you want politicians to restrict speech.

I would say banning micro-targeting for political ads would be a good start. Only allow districts to be targeted with a “say it to the whole class” approach. That could help restore the shared framework required for a functional public debate while precluding things that harm it.
David. Censorship is never an answer. Instead try education. Teach fact vetting and find out what makes the US people so crude toward each other. Find out what they learn in school that makes them this way. Something does. The rest of the 1st world does not behave this way.
