On top of what it meant in China, it was one of the first times relatively new entities like CNN made it possible for much of the world to, um, not see at least part of this history unfolding in real time. Many Western media were in Beijing for Soviet Premier Gorbachev's visit.

It's been heavily censored in china such that a lot of young people in china don't know it happened, or are taught a warped history where the students were the aggressors. They're trying to cover it up, and are doing it very successfully too. That is what he was referring to
