Some people are reacting off the headline, not the actual article.... “An innovative prevention measure gives people the power to suspend their own gun rights.”

And this is why many won’t seek mental health care. Ecause they know it’s a possibility that they won’t be able to buy guns. My brother is one of those who needs the help but resists because he LOVES his guns. There has to be a better way.

Is he paranoid that any mental health care will show up on a background check? Or does he think that if he told a doctor what’s going on, they would determine that he’s an immediate danger to himself or others?

The key word being voluntary. While in theory it is a good idea, being voluntary there are those who are not going to not going to voluntarily say they are being depressed. It's just another feel good law.

Another issue is this. When someone is depressed, they are on medication. They could easily overdose on that medication. ex; Robin Williams.

I agree with DH and to a degree, you. Unfortunately, medical schools do a woefully inadequate job in preparing PCP's in evaluating mental health conditions, treatments and resources available. I'm not even gonna comment on the level of public mental health care...

I mean it’s nice to have this ability for when a person feels like he needs the help because impulsivity can be fatal - but don’t be fooled into thinking this fixes much.
-
Like you, I think it doesn't fix much; however, I think too that fixing a little is enough to warrant giving the idea a try because, AFAIK, there is no single, no "one size fits all" measure that'll reduce the incidence of involuntary gun deaths and injuries.

Best idea ever! Many people who wrestle with mental illness or other issues have the desire to protect others from the darkness they are fighting.
