ESPECIALLY in city schools that are historically underfunded. That face the most gun violence in the United States yet are given little to no resources to deal with the trauma it brings resulting in more retaliation and violence.

How can I help you with this?
-
We should organize those who actually work in the schools, especially counselors & social workers. I have spoken to counselors individually who are fed up with the lack of resources & money they face.

I was a school social worker for 22 years. I loved my job, until they took away the mental health component, and had me focus on paperwork. The people in charge did not understand our importance, or what we could do.
-
THIS... School social workers and counselors know what students need, but our suggestions /requests fall on deaf ears. Yes, people don't understand what we do or what we need to do and it's not paperwork or scheduling

David, you and your friends inspired me to go back to high school counseling. I started last week! In my interview I spoke of feeling a pull back to counseling since
@MFOLParkland. I took 8 years off to stay home with my kids, but I am back. <3 Thank you for all you do. <3 -
Thank you for your passion! This is what kids need too. Someone who will listen and care

All universities and high schools should have mental health policies that address issues such as: •students seeking mental healthcare •Reasonable Accommodation for students in academics and their living space •protocols for emergencies •rehabilitation for students
-
My middle school had that, but that was a rare case. And sadly, public schools are getting defunded left and right...

Our schools need less anxiety provoking high stakes tests and more project based learning. Our students and parents need real programs in place that help to end the inequalities that poverty creates - and that is a societal issue, not just a school issue
-
It is THE societal issue that impacts all aspects of the education system. Why are students coming to school with trauma issues? Guidance counselors are a bandaid after allowing the wound. We need to stop poverty induced trauma not triage after the fact.
