This report clearly states that shooters become shooters in order to gain fame and notoriety. It may not be the “role”, but it may be the moral imperative. If a job makes you behave in a manner that endangers others you should not hold that job.

We live in a culture of fame. There are many problems that we have that may be blunted if we just ignored the bad actors, even when they do high profile things. There is a way for us to be informed WITHOUT glorifying the bad guys.
