I don't understand the US justice system. Life in prison, makes perfect sense. But why add 419 years? He'll be very much dead once he's served his life sentence. So, why not just sentence him to life? Surely that's all there is.

Because in the US, “Life” doesn’t always mean their lifetime. So they give really long sentences to make sure it is their lifetime.
