"Mader had received no training in how to handle such situations. No one in the Weirton department had." This sums up the problem with American policing right there.

Reminds me of a situation that occurred at a library I worked for. A guard showed restraint and refused to shoot an armed (butcher knife) person. Other guards called him a coward, but everyone walked away alive. The armed person was a 15yo black girl. He was right.

I read the whole story. Amazing. Police culture is a problem. I know a former officer and she will never back down and admit the blue code of silence is wrong. But it is wrong.

They're supposed to be able to de-escalate situations. Every city pays for public service, we don't pay for vigilantes. Citizens should be able to work to create policies with their Police Department or vote to create systems that serve the public.

Another story here. Similar to Tamir Rice but with a far better outcome.https://twitter.com/WHOhd/status/1068234531516358656?s=19 …

That they reward those so ready to shoot to kill instead of those who assess the situation and do what's right, is the problem. They're supposed to honor the sanctity of human life, not go berserk and shoot first thing. It's maddening! TRAIN COPS to honor life!

I love this story, as heartbreaking as it is, and as maddening as it is that the police chief fired the one man who was honestly, ethically, humanely doing his job RIGHT. And that the others thought he was a coward when he was the only brave one there. Crazy for sure. Glad he won

Yes, it's a tough decision to make, but with a clear mind and not with some predisposed assumption based on prejudices. At the initial contact with Williams,Mader did not feel his life was in danger, once the weapon was raised, different story.
