I had an interesting conversation today when the question of congressional age limits came up. Do you think there should be an age limit on congressmen, congresswomen, and congressthem?

Here I’m talking about upper age limits such as not being able to run if your over the age of 70 btw I’m not endorsing this just curious as to what y’all think.

What about term limits so you prevent career politicians while also not falling into what could be ageism? Some people live different lives & take different paths. There could be great septuagenarians or octogenarians who decide to run later in life. They should be permitted.

Yes. Congressional term limits should be passed when sane people regain power. 4 terms in House, 2 in Senate. Lifetime max of 16 years. See also: @elizabethforma’s proposal to bar legislators from serving as lobbyists & vice versa. End the revolving door.

Personally, I think barring a group of people from something for no reason other than some characteristic that they share is literally the definition of discrimination

I think it's fair not to have to worry about your representative dying in office of old age. Term limits and a cap at 65 seems fair to me.

I think cognitive ability is more important than age limit. Some people stay sharp as hell into their 80s and 90s. Others lose it in their 50s and 60s. Maybe a cognitive assessment after a certain age?

I'm not sure Nancy Pelosi or Diane Feinstein should be subjected to cognitive assessments. One would have to establish a baseline, anyway, to determine if there is a decline. No - we have enough age discrimination as it is. Now, let's talk about ethics evaluations...

Well, there are people like President Jimmy Carter, who at age 93 is sharp and present (and was disrespected for trying to play nice, back in the day). He could lead by example. There are the youthful evil. It's not about age.

Ted Kennedy was old and tremendous. Joe Biden is old and crushing life. Marco Rubio is young and a hollow shell of a man. Devin Nunes is young and actively awful. Age limits are dumb.
